Golf team wins first conference title

The men's golf team from St. Norbert College in De Pere won the Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championship for the first time last week and will play in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Led by medalist Nic Vrubley, the Green Knights shot 783 for 45 holes in the weather-shortened tournament at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Ill., and edged runner-up Monmouth (Ill.) College by five strokes.

Vrubley became SNC's first MWC individual champion by shooting an 8-over-par 188. He held off Carroll's Blaine Lynch, who finished second with 191.

The Green Knights' Jacob Hebbard tied for fifth with 197.

Their other players were Nick Roelse (200, tie for 11th); Brandon Gries (202, tie for 15th); Nick Mueller (206, tie for 19th); and Evan Mass (207, 21st).

The NCAA tournament will start Tuesday and go until May 17 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.

Softball season ends

The softball team had its season end last weekend in the MWC tournament that was moved from Mel Nicks Field in De Pere to Lawrence University's Whiting Field in Appleton because of wet grounds.

The Green Knights (20-15) lost 9-3 to eventual champion Cornell (Iowa) College in the first round of the double-elimination event Saturday. They bounced back later in the day with an 8-5 win over Lake Forest (Ill.) College in an elimination game.

Lawrence, however, knocked SNC out of the tournament by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 win in an elimination matchup Sunday.

Baseball starts MWC tourney Friday

SNC's baseball team (24-11) will play in the MWC tournament, starting with a game Friday at 9 a.m. against Knox (Ill.) College at Marian University in Fond du Lac.

Ripon College, which won the North Division at 14-2, is the host for the two-day tournament. The Green Knights finished second in the North at 12-4.

The championship round is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, starting at 1, at Ripon.

Green Knights junior infielder/pitcher Travis Mason last week was named to the first team of the Capital One NCAA Division III Baseball Academic All-District VI squad.

The West De Pere High School graduate has compiled a perfect 4.00 grade-point average with a major in business administration.

Mason, a team captain, is among SNC's leaders with a .333 batting average, a .538 slugging percentage, 17 extra-base hits and 35 runs scored.
