Letter: McDill Pond refill must continue

I'm a resident of Stevens Point and live on McDill Pond. While I'm disappointed the refill has been temporarily halted because of nesting waterfowl, I understand and share the concern.

The fact is however that the refill will affect only a very few birds while restoration of McDill will benefit hundreds of ducks and geese. Refill will also increase habitat for bald eagles, osprey, sand hill cranes and several species of heron.

Over the 10 years we've lived on the pond there have been thousands of migratory birds of many species that used it as a resting place in their travels.

All parties involved in the restoration of McDill have taken great care to preserve and protect other types of wildlife like turtles and frogs that are important to the ecosystem. Timing of the refill was carefully planned and done in full consultation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Common sense dictates that U.S. Fish and Wildlife let the project move forward as planned.

The pond must be refilled now.
