The Humane Society's annual Walk, Run and Bike is Saturday. This year's event has many new features including a new name, 5K-9, a play on the route's length and our four-legged canine friends.

The 5K (3.2-mile) route begins at the Humane Society. Festivities kick off at 9 a.m. with participant registration. The registration fee is $15 per person. Runners start at 9:30 a.m. with walkers, bikers and companions following shortly after. A time clock will be on display, for participants interested in tracking their pace.

Ask your friends, family or coworkers to pledge money in support of the Humane Society. We have a variety of new pledge levels and corresponding prizes. Raise $200 or more in pledges and be entered to win a Kindle Fire, compliments of Slattery Insurance. Register on or before Thursday and be entered to win a pet themed basket, courtesy of BowWow Meow, valued at $175.

We welcome Humane Society alumni. If you are bringing your own dog, please bring proof of a current rabies vaccination. This is a large event, so if your pet does not like other animals or does not do well in crowds, please leave them at home. A variety of Humane Society dogs will be available to take along the route and would love to accompany you.

Following the walk, join us for an afternoon of fun activities. A food stand and huge plant sale will run until 1:30 p.m. Come early for a large variety of hostas, bleeding hearts, annuals and perennials at great prices. Pet and feed Fox family's 4-H ponies, visit with the Wood County K9 unit and watch many dog skill demonstrations. Light grooming for dogs will be offered by Carol's Pet Grooming. Nature's Niche educational group will have on display, exotic and native creatures.

In addition, Tonya Hawke, owner of T.Hawke photography, is offering a special pet photo session and print package. For $30, a photo will be submitted to the Humane Society's 2014 Paw Prints Calendar and owners will receive a 5x7, plus four wallet size prints. Artist Charissa Lager will be painting pet themed tiles, which can be purchased for just $5. Choose to take the tile home or have it mounted in a display inside the Humane Society's lobby.

The Humane Society will offer discounted microchipping on Saturday. Have your pet chipped and registered for just $15. Microchipping will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointments necessary.

For more information, go to our website, www.swchs.com, Facebook page or call the Humane Society at 715-423-0505. Registration forms can be downloaded online.

All proceeds generated at 5K-9 Walk, Run and Bike benefit the pets at South Wood County Humane Society. Be sure to mark your calendar and Fido's, too!

We hope to see you Saturday.
