The Wisconsin State Assembly awarded Bo Johnson the Hometown Hero Award on Tuesday. Bo was nominated for the award by State Rep. Garey Bies, R-Sister Bay. Bo's mother, Annika Johnson accepted the award on his behalf.

"Bo was a very special person who had a profound impact on our community," Bies said. "He was wise beyond his years and extremely worthy of this recognition."

The Hometown Heroes program recognizes extraordinary individuals who have made their community and state proud because of their service to others through acts of selflessness and generosity. Bo was a 13 year-old boy from Sister Bay who died Sept. 28 from extradmedullary acute myeloid leukemia. The community of Door County and beyond rallied along with Bo during his battle with the disease.

"Bo's message of hope and kindness to others inspired our entire community to be better people," Bies said. "When this award was created, they must have had Bo Johnson in mind."

Annika Johnson was presented the award and a citation recognizing Bo's life. One clause of the citation reads:

"Bo Johnson never lost his positive attitude or zest for life, inspiring an entire community to reach out and help others, and to live life to the fullest with his slogan, YOLO - you only live once."
