Skogen's Festival Foods will buy Spiegelhoff's Supervalu in Kenosha and take over the store's operations June 11, Skogen's announced today.

Mark Skogen, company president and CEO, said the acquisition is a good expansion opportunity.

"Kenosha represents a key opportunity to expand our business and to better serve our growing customer base throughout Wisconsin," he said.

Nick Arlt, a spokesman for the Skogen family-owned group of 17 Festival stores, said the company still is finalizing the purchase. Operators of Spiegelhoff Supervalu began informing employees of the deal Wednesday and likely would continue meeting with employees today, he said.

For now, Arlt said, the store will continue as Supervalu.

Adding the Kenosha store continues the Skogen family's southward expansion. The company, which maintains a corporate office in De Pere, opened its first Green Bay store in 1993. It now employs 4,500 people.

Arlt said representatives from the Festival group would visit the Kenosha store this week. He could not say whether any of the current Kenosha employees would be offered jobs, but said Festival is open to retaining workers.

A typical Skogen Festival store employs 250 to 300 workers and is about 70,000 square feet, Arlt said. The Kenosha store is slightly smaller.
