Having exercise gear that suits the sport or activity you are doing can be motivating and might help you make that extra mile when you are comfortable on a run or walk.

Performance-orientated outdoor workout clothing is designed to help runners regulate their temperatures and stay dry. The fabrics in many brands now use “hollow tubes with outside corners and lots of surface area,” said Revel Sports owner Perry Dau of Weston.

He said a lot of the compression apparel is designed to speed up recovery and performance. It is more costly but often lasts for years. Dau said he has a closet full of running or skiing clothing that is 10 to 15 years old and still in decent shape.

Performance clothing should protect against wind and cold and help the wearer to manage moisture.

“A little bit of moisture against skin can get you in a bad situation. Best to get it away from you for your comfort,” Dau said.

He said his online shop specializes in running and triathlon gear as well as cycling and Nordic skiing needs, with much of the products made in the United States. The business opened about 10 years ago after Dau left his job with Fiskars.

“We felt there weren’t bike-specific or run-specific stores with high-end high quality apparel,” he said.
