Letter: Foster care a quality program in county

4:29 PM, May 9, 2013  |  Comments

May is Foster Care Month in Manitowoc County. My husband Rob and I had the privilege to attend the Manitowoc County Executive Board meeting in April for the declaration. We got a chance to share a few of our experiences in being a foster family the last two years.

On May 1, the county had a ceremony and placed 78 pinwheels for each child in care, in front of Manitowoc County Human Services. As a foster parent and citizen of this county, I feel it is important to help bring awareness and even change much of the stigma that is put on foster care families, biological families and even social workers.

I would encourage families, couples and singles interested in bringing a change to a child's life to call Manitowoc County Human Services Foster Care Program at (920) 683-4230. We are in need of new foster care homes. It has changed my life and my family's life. We have shared joys, fears and tears, but most of all love.

I would like to thank Human Services for all their support and compassion. Believe me, it hasn't been without challenges. I realize how important our social workers are and how difficult their job is. The general public does not understand all the laws by which social workers must abide.

Foster care needs continued support and awareness. How fortunate we are to have such a stellar program here in Manitowoc County. We are at the forefront for change, such as introducing co-parenting, where foster families and parents actually work with biological families and parents with shared parenting skills. As a foster family, it is our goal to reunify a child with their family under safe conditions. We have had the privilege to adopt two of our foster children.

Please remember as a society we have a responsibility for our children.
