She grew up near the cotton fields of Tennessee. She was persuaded to come to Wisconsin by the suave and debonair man she knew as her soul mate, Lorrin Nall. Bettye Nall was the right person to come along.

She was truly a pioneer. Not in the sense of the old days, but in the field of public service. In a world dominated by men, Bettye had the initiative to put her hat into the ring at numerous levels.

She served on the Spencer Village Board, serving as president for numerous years. She represented Spencer and the southwest corner of Marathon County on the Marathon County Board. She also served on the Northcentral Technical College Board.

I don't think there was ever a challenge she would back down from. With such a distinguished background, it was only fitting that she be recognized.

As the history of time would dictate, Bettye turned 80. It was time for a party. The planning stages had begun.

Her four daughters pretty much planned the whole affair. A picnic-style birthday party was held on Sunday at the Olde Hall in Spencer.

Memories and dreams dictated parts of the celebration. The palmetto cheese sandwiches came from the numerous trips Bettye, Lorrin and the kids went on. Bettye always had these cheese sandwiches for the kids to eat so they wouldn't have to stop all the time.

Even though Bettye told the girls, "You girls just go ahead and do what you want," they did do what they wanted, but not without a minor assist from their mother.

You see, Bettye had these dreams. One was of a picnic with lollipops adorning the tables. Sure enough, there were small bouquets of different colored lollipops on the table. The picnic was even invaded by the nemesis ants (plastic of course).

For those attending the birthday party, it became quite clear that Bettye Nall had touched the lives of hundreds of people. Family and friends came from far and wide. Members of the various boards Bettye served on were in attendance. Members of her church came.

Along one wall, a table displayed the numerous plaques and recognitions she received through her illustrious career.

The four hours had a continuous flow of people coming in and out. Through it all, this grand lady withstood the challenge. Her forever present smile and a warm hug were waiting as you approached her.

It was a beautiful day, one that no one would deny Bettye Nall. Truly, she was a pioneer, and Spencer can stand tall and be proud that she is one of them. Congratulations, Bettye, on your 80th birthday, and make sure you always carry that great smile for us all.
