The old Beaver Dam School has new life. The Fremont Area Historical Society recently leased the school building from the Fremont Town Board and will celebrate that milestone May 25 when alumni gather at the site for a reunion.

The historical society hopes to repurpose the school as a museum and education center for school children and genealogy research site, said historian Elsie Mae Yohr.

"We're kicking things off with a reunion to gather stories about the school building, its students and teachers and what it was really like to go to Beaver Dam School."

The event, which features an old-fashioned country school potluck, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The old Beaver Dam School was built in 1884 and remained open until 1958 The Town of Fremont purchased the building in 1960 and converted it into its town hall. When a new town hall was constructed in 2012 on nearby property along Hwy 96, the town board considered bulldozing the building.

The historical society, with community support, had other plans, however, mobilizing to preserve the school and its historical links to early Wisconsin and Fremont culture.

Those who plan to attend the reunion should RSVP to Yohr at (715) 258-8478. Those who cannot attend may send memories and photos to Yohr at N3332 Alm Lane, Waupaca, WI 54981 or by email to fremontareahistoricalsociety@gmail.com
