Expert: Village president can't prohibit board members, residents from speaking

A village president does not have the authority to dictate to elected officials what they can publicly say about village issues like one did in a committee meeting last week, a Wisconsin open meetings expert said.

Village President Jeffrey Weisenberger told elected Village Board member Matthew Deffner on Friday during a specialPersonnel Committee meeting that he's not authorized to talk to the media or council members from other municipalities about village issues and told him that his wife needs to "mind her Ps and Qs."
