When her husband, Jerry, was found to have a terminal lung disease, Mary Silvis told him she would take care of him in their Wausau home until the day he died. She was sure she could handle caring for him on her own.

Six months into Jerry Silvis' battle with the disease, COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - the couple turned to hospice services for help when it became too difficult and emotionally exhausting for Mary to care for Jerry. The disease causes coughing, chest tightness and wheezing.
