Legislation authored by state Rep. Garey Bies to broaden the definition of an intoxicant was passed unanimously Tuesday by the state Assembly.

"This bill closes a gap in our current operating while intoxicated laws," said Bies, R-Sister Bay. "Right now, a person who inhales or ingests a hazardous substance and proceeds to drive can't be charged accordingly."

The bill broadens the definition to include a substance that is inhaled, ingested, or otherwise consumed in a manner contrary to its intended purpose.

It now moves to the state Senate for further review and debate.
