There was a wise-cracking DJ with the Sunday afternoon air shift playing the hits - pre-Beatles - on the rock 'n' roll station all the teens in my town had on their radios back there in the stone age. He used to recycle the same jokes over and over and over and over.

One he used each year on Mothers Day went as follows: "I remember how my mom worried about me when I was a kid. When there wasn't enough food in the house for the two of us, she'd sit there at the kitchen table, wondering what I would eat."

That was not the case with my mother. ...
