The Door County Baseball League begins its 2013 season Sunday. The Maplewood Mets will play their first game at home as Baileys Harbor comes to town.

Maplewood will continue the tradition of honoring past players as they welcome Lee Petrina to the plate to throw out the first pitch. Petrina was a pitcher for Maplewood in the 1970s.

The Mets will also play at home next Sunday against Kolberg. Play ball!

SDFD raffle sales start soon

The Southern Door Fire Department's raffle tickets should be appearing in area mailboxes soon. Tickets are being sent to all property owners in the towns of Clay Banks and Nasewaupee as well as the town and village of Forestville.

Please consider helping the SDFD with the largest fundraiser the firefighters and emergency medical responders will conduct in 2013. The drawing will be on June 15, following the SDFD vs. Reservists softball game at Legion Memorial Park, as part of the Flag Day Celebration in Forestville.

In other department news, a field representative for Insurance Services Organization (ISO) is planning to be in our area May 20. He will conduct a review of the information that was submitted by both departments during the recent ISO audit. The audit included information about apparatus, equipment and personnel.

A water shuttle exercise will also be conducted that evening. High scores for the departments could help to lower insurance premiums for residents and businesses in both districts. Final determinations are expected in the next few months.

Library news

The Forestville library is looking for donations of used books, DVDs and music CDs that are in good condition. No encyclopedias or musty or damaged materials, please. They appreciate your donations and can give you a tax-exempt slip for your 2013 taxes.
