Welcome to Baileys Harbor! Well, Boyd and Candice Finell along with their children are not new to Baileys Harbor, having lived here for 12 years, but their restaurant certainly is.
The Finells have purchased the building at 8037 Wisconsin 57 where the coffee shop Espresso Lane had been operating until it closed earlier this year.
The new restaurant will be named the DC Deli. The Finells operated the DC Deli restaurant in Sister Bay for six years until 2011. Since that time they have been looking for the perfect location to reopen the restaurant. It turned out that the best place was right in their hometown.
The location, which is right next to St. Mary's of the Lake Church, has a great yard and large deck to take advantage of the beautiful views of the lake.
Since taking possession of the restaurant, the family has been busy cleaning and remodeling the inside of the building. Walls have been painted, tile floors installed and even entire walls have been removed to open up the interior. Additional equipment will be installed in the upcoming days.
The restaurant is expected to open sometime around the third week of May. For a short period of time, breakfast and lunch only will be served. The restaurant will then begin to serve a dinner menu as well.
Boyd Finell has been a chef for 20 years. Some of his specialties include corned beef hash for breakfast and his homemade soups. Boyd also loves to prepare his own smoked meat.
In the past, the DC Deli has been known for its barbecue ribs, smoked pulled pork, ham and beef brisket. Finnell even does his own pastrami.
In addition to being a great chef, Boyd is a classical guitar player and trained at the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music.
Candice said that the restaurant will have a comprehensive menu but will specialize in "Southern-style comfort food." The restaurant will be serving beer and wine with its food.
The Finells are excited about their new restaurant and serving the local residents along with the visitors to Baileys Harbor. The DC Deli will have a grand-opening party with live music soon We'll keep you informed. In the meantime, welcome, DC Deli!
Baileys Harbor will hold its annual Spring Fling event on May 18. One of the main events is always the Door County Scottie Rally. This year's rally is going to be an international event with attendees from more than 11 states, plus Australia and South Africa.
A big highlight of the day will be the "Parade of Scots." Dogs and their owners will travel east on County F/EE and will arrive around 11:30 a.m. at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall. The Clan Donald Pipe and Drum Corps are returning to once again lead the parade. Many of the participating dogs are rescue dogs.
In the past 12 years, this gathering of Scottie dog devotees has raised more than $96,000 to support Scottish Terrier health-related research and Scottie Rescue.
The Spring Fling also includes an Arts and Craft Fair that will have booths on the Town Hall grounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You can head inside the Town Hall to partake in the Taste of Baileys Harbor Soup Fundraiser between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Delicious soup provided by Baileys Harbor's restaurants will served along with delicious homemade pie. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds will go to the Door County Humane Society and the Baileys Harbor Community Association for future events.
Door Shakespeare will host a Ceilidh (kay-lee) party from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Town Hall. Come and kick off the Door Shakespeare 2013 season with a fun-filled evening of traditional Scottish folk music, dancing and storytelling. A genuine Scottish band, "O'er The Border," will be playing and teaching the dances. Tickets are $10, but if you are brave enough to wear the traditional kilt, it's only $5. Beer, wine and refreshments will be available.
A new addition to the Spring Fling will be a communitywide garage sale. The Baileys Harbor Community Association will be printing a map and flyer listing participants' locations, addresses, phone numbers and brief descriptions of what will be sold. The flyer will go on the Baileys Harbor website, Facebook page and will be distributed at the Spring Fling event.
