The Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum, located on the grounds of the UW-Fond du Lac campus, is excited to announce their new "friends" program. If you love nature, are a conservationist at heart, or want to be part of preserving the natural history of Fond du Lac County, then the Friends of the Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum is the perfect membership to join.
The mission of the Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum is to reestablish, for future generations, the native prairie and representative plant communities for the purpose of education, wildlife habitat, and public enjoyment. "Teaching our children and grandchildren the importance of and respect for the environment and the interrelationships of all involved with the environment is paramount in our society," says Sally Scott, executive director. "We at the Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum are all about such teaching."
Since 1991, over 40 acres of native prairie and a formal arboretum with several forest communities have been planted on the grounds of the UW-Fond du Lac Campus. The diversity and scale of the site has attracted many species of invertebrates, birds, and small mammals that lived here at the time of early settlement.
