For 25 years, Press-Gazette Media has had the honor of recognizing high school students in Northeastern Wisconsin who have achieved success and are embarking on a future of endless possibilities.
And the 10 students selected to the 2013 Academic Team are certainly no exception.
Sonya Loberger is the West High valedictorian. Sara DePouw has taken all five AP classes offered at Oconto High School as well as two college-level courses. Erin Huffer of Southwest High is an AP Scholar with Distinction, and Jordan Stiede has earned Academic Highest Honors for the past three years at Pulaski High School. Jordan Lewandowski has taken four Lakeland College courses and two UW-Green Bay courses in preparation for his next steps.
Jacob Wiese has excelled in basketball, cross country and baseball throughout his career at Algoma High School. Amanda Hermans of Preble High School is editor-in-chief of her school newspaper.
Erika Jensen has spent two hours a month for the past four years in Youth Service Learning at Bay Port High School. Mark Cullen of Notre Dame Academy gave back during a service trip to Mississippi this year. Sarah Meiners performs each week in her parish choir.
These students have excelled inside and outside the classroom and represent a generation of Northeastern Wisconsin students with enormous potential who have already rolled up their sleeves and worked hard to improve this community in numerous ways.
They are about to embark on the next stage of their academic careers — in many cases venturing away from home to explore the opportunities available to them.
You will read more on their accomplishments in the Press-Gazette in the coming days.
We encourage them to take the time to reflect on those accomplishments — to be proud of how hard they have worked and how far they have come.
We also encourage them to be excited for the future. They have so many new experiences and a world of opportunity ahead of them.
But most of all, we encourage them to enjoy the present. This moment is theirs. They have certainly earned it.
