Walking bus offers safe, healthy way to school

If you've spotted a large group of children walking down a street on the West side of Oshkosh Thursday mornings, then you've likely caught a glimpse of a walking school bus.

About 36 childrem walk together along one of three routes to Carl Traeger Elementary School every Thursday. A pair of nursing students at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh started the program this spring to promote a healthy and safe activity for kids.

"The walking school bus is about where you just walk to school, and it's like a bus," said Max Calmes, a first grader who takes the walking bus every week. ...
