Doug Berdan: Happy Mother's Day, from the heart (column)

Today we all try to express to our mothers just how lucky we are to have them in our lives. I've always considered myself pretty lucky and try to spend some quality time with my mother on Mother's Day, though sometimes it's tough. After all, she has no interest in gutting fish or placing trail cameras or working on outboard motors or ... what's that? Do things that she likes to do? Well gee, that's an idea.

Let's see; she's a tremendous musician ... I have the rhythm of a three-legged giraffe. Um, she's got a green thumb and is amazing with plants ... I can't remember to water a cactus frequently enough to keep it alive. I suppose I could go shopping with her. Do mothers enjoy Gander Mountain? This isn't looking good. Luckily, I mailed that card and ordered those flowers.

I jest, of course. My mother and I actually spend quite a bit of time together, usually setting aside at least one day a week to catch up - and no, not in that odd Howard Wolowitz sort of way. Today, though, should be about more than just visiting and catching up. Today, do something extra special for your mothers, even if it is just sending some flowers. Go the extra mile though and find out what kind she actually likes. I'm sure the good folks at Krueger Floral or Blossoms and Bows would be happy to help. While you're there, pick out a card, too. Just make sure you take the time to read it, thereby avoiding sending ones that turn out to be from "the cat" or "the hamster." Moms certainly deserve that kind of thoughtfulness.

Of course, there are always those who leave their thoughtfulness to the last minute. If that's you, why not take your mom out for a fabulous Mother's Day meal? May I recommend brunch at Hoffman House or dinner at 2510 Restaurant? Your mom would love either. If I can work it out, not only will I take my mother, but I'll take my wife as well. After all, she's a pretty great mother in her own right, picking up those messes and enduring the tantrums ... not to mention the things our daughter puts her through.

Whatever you decide to do for your mothers today, make sure it comes from the heart. Moms don't always need the most expensive gifts or the fanciest gifts, but they do need heartfelt gifts. Above all else, make sure you say, "Mom, I love you. Happy Mother's Day."
