Readers React: Plenty of blame to go around

Jail failures? What we have here is a failure to communicate. With so many in Wausau and Marathon County aware of the lack of training and missing sheriff, including the leaders in the Sheriff's Department, why is it just a jail failure? Yes, we need the training and, yes, we need the workers and prisoners to be in a safe environment and we should not flinch from our responsibility and we need oversight to see that workers' and prisoners' rights are not being trammeled.

- John Enk

It so totally does not surprise me that this will be blamed on our former sheriff. No one else will be man or woman enough to step up to the plate and take responsibility for any other actions that could have contributed to this "utter collapse."

Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger now says everyone in a position of authority knew all about these issues: himself, Hoenisch, Parks and Dickman. So the taxpayers paid for the survey every two years, the employees gave the organization a failing grade in past years, and the department heads did nothing. Additional resignations appear to be in order.

- Delmer Polak

As Karger said, there was/is a system failure and the system needs to be retired and replaced with a better one. Resignations and dismissals aren't necessarily the solution; often they are just a reaction. The County Board and Karger all will have a part in the new system's oversight, but it most certainly needs a strong sheriff and jail administrator.

Hopefully the defenders of incompetent elected officials now have a better appreciation of the value of leadership. The survey is not a surprise to anyone in the organization.

- Doug Diny

Marathon County suffers from the same problems all Wisconsin share: lack of manpower, outdated facilities, etc. Inmates themselves are also at risk from attacks by other inmates. Adding additional employees and hours is just sound business.

Draft versions of Sunday editorials are posted online on Wednesday afternoon for feedback and reader reaction.
