Packers sign tryout LB Savage

May 13, 2013

The Packers have signed New Mexico State linebacker Donte Savage after taking part in the team's rookie orientation camp on a tryout basis this past weekend.

The 6-foot-1, 247-pound Savage, whose signing was confirmed by his agent Cameron Foster, started three years on the Aggies’ defensive line, including 12 games this past season when he recorded 45 tackles (seven for a loss) and tied for a team high with three sacks.

Savage played three seasons with Packers cornerback Davon House, but took a redshirt during his true senior year in 2011 because of an academics issue before rejoining the team this past season.

At his Pro Day, Savage ran a 4.80-second time in the 40-yard dash with 20 bench reps and a vertical of 32˝ inches.

He becomes the four tryout player to sign with the Packers this season, joining Illinois State receiver Tyrone Walker, Washington fullback Jonathan Amosa and Arizona State cornerback Brandon Smith.

Earlier on Monday, the Packers released linebacker Micah Johnson, putting the Packers at 87 players on their 90-man roster with Savage's signing.

Savage figures to factor into the outside-linebacker competition behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, which currently consists of second-year linebacker Dezman Moses, Illinois State sixth-round pick Nate Palmer and Eastern Michigan undrafted signee Andy Mulumba.
