UW surplus is commendable

EDITOR: Several letters and legislators have recently criticized the University of Wisconsin System's wise fiscal policy of saving for future plans and unanticipated needs. Thank you to the Daily Herald Editorial Board for its well-reasoned and expressed editorial in the May 1 edition countering this criticism. The UW System should be commended, not criticized, for its efficient business management and planning. Any business (or any person) that does not save to meet its future planning or unanticipated needs is skating on thin ice.

For the benefit of all Wisconsin residents, the primary concern of our Wisconsin legislative bodies toward the UW System should be to make sure that the present and potential future needs of its educational mission are funded as well as possible. Educated people are especially employable people.

Mary Clare and D.J. Freeman,

Wausau
