Committee vote would aid Cana Island restoration

If approved by the County Board later this month, Door County would financially help with restoration of the Cana Island without actually writing a check for the project.

Although the 8.7-acre island has been a part of the county park system for the past seven years, the Door County Maritime Museum operates the site, which has a lighthouse active since the 1860s.

The museum pays the county around $90,000 per year for control of the island, a portion of the money contributed by visitors to the site, Finance Director Shirley Scalish told the County Board Finance Committee Monday. ...
