Don't enable telemarketing pests

This 1910 telephone was given a special copper cover by the Roycroft community. It sold for $10,625 at a Rago Arts auction in Lambertville, N.J., and probably will have to be rewired to be used. Photo courtesy Terry Kovel

EDITOR: When more than 2 million people signed up for the Do Not Call list, we meant what we said: Do not call us. For the 10th year in a row, telemarketers and robocalls have topped the list of consumer complaints, proving what a colossal failure this Do Not Call list has been.

We now have two possibly enlightened legislators wanting to make some changes. State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf, R-River Falls, and state Rep. Andre Jacques, R-De Pere, want a bill to make signing up permanent. Great! We won't need to renew. They would also outlaw robocalls. Thank God!

But their bill still would permit hand-dialed political calls. What part of "do not call" do they not understand?

We have a protected right to privacy in our own homes and these unsolicited, intrusive phone calls have got to stop. And yes, this goes for nonprofits as well. Sorry. We all know which charities we want to support.

We must stand united and not let the politicians ram this blatant invasion of our privacy down our throats. Call your congressmen and -women, organize, sign a petition, do a postcard campaign. Do something! But hurry! They're gearing up for the next election.
