Green Bay Southwest High School's eight medals topped the field in the 17th annual Solar Olympics on Wednesday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Twenty-four high schools competed in the event, sponsored by WPS Community Foundation. De Pere High School received six medals and Marinette High School five.
The Solar Olympics challenged competitors to demonstrate skills with projects involving solar power by designing, constructing and demonstrating a solar cooker and a solar water heater, as well as racing a solar-powered model car. Students competed in an essay contest, a "solar jeopardy" quiz game and events for solar building design, solar T-shirt design, solar sculpture, solar photography, community outreach presentation and a marketing campaign.
