More women choosing mastectomy, genetic counseling to prevent breast cancer

Like actress Angelina Jolie, more local women are becoming proactive in preventing breast cancer through genetic counseling, testing and, in appropriate cases, preventative mastectomies.

Jolie recently underwent a preventative double mastectomy after she learned a genetic mutation put her at high risk for developing breast cancer.

Marshfield Clinic breast surgeon Dr. Anna Seydel said the surgery might be the right choice for some women, but more importantly, she said she hopes Jolie's story "increases awareness and people become more aware of breast cancer risk and get screened." ...
