Mike,

From your article on May 12 (http://pck.rs/10qEeCc), very nice by the way, this part stood out to me: "If someone isnít getting the job done effectively, McCarthy wonít hesitate to find someone who can do it better."

It's funny how Mason Crosby still has a job with the Packers considering he was THE WORST player at his position in the NFL last year, and there were about 3 games where fans and many teammates thought he should be replaced after. He gets paid as if he's a top-tier kicker, and his stats are free-agent like........ he should be paid NFL minimum. And that's not even talking about the clutch gene.

My response

Brian,

I think itís telling that the Packers brought in some competition (Giorgio Tavecchio) for Crosby for the first time since his rookie training camp in 2007. That tells me they arenít satisfied with Crosbyís performance last season Ė how could they be? Ė and want better results.

There can be no excuses for Crosbyís poor accuracy last year. He knows it as well as anyone. I think the Packers are doing him a major favor by adding another kicker to the roster. Perhaps some degree of complacency set in for Crosby with no other kickers to push him the past five years.

The best I have ever seen Crosby perform was during the 2007 training camp when he and Dave Rayner engaged in a one-on-one battle for the place-kicking job. Crosby was superb and rarely missed during that camp.

Maybe he simply needs someone next to him to keep him sharp and get the competitive juices flowing. My guess is Crosby will respond to the challenge and keep the job in 2013.

But make no mistake, McCarthy and Ted Thompson canít afford to allow a sub-60% kicker stay on the roster for very long. Their patience can only go so far before it becomes a disservice to the team.
