Fire station improvements could help attract female recruits

The Stevens Point Fire Department is planning a series of improvements at its No. 1 station that will make it more attractive to potential female recruits.

The improvements, which will be designed by 5 Bugles Design of Chippewa Falls if the contract is approved by the City Council in June, will add gender-neutral bathroom, locker room and shower facilities to its primary station, 1701 Franklin St.

Right now, Chief Tracey Kujawa is the only female firefighter, but that could change as the fire department periodically has women on its waiting list. ...
