A John Deere 8640 and the attached cultivator kicked up a small cloud of dust as it circled a farm field here Wednesday morning.

Similar scenes played out in other parts of Northeastern Wisconsin this week as farmers started the process of preparing fields for planting.

Wednesday was the first day of the 2013 growing season that Dan Walczyk spent behind the wheel of his John Deere. A lingering spring has kept farmers out of the fields a little longer than normal this year, but they say there's still plenty of time to get crops planted and a good crop harvested. ...
