Waupun Area FFA members recognized

WAUPUN - Waupun Area FFA members and community leaders were recognized at the 73rd Waupun Area FFA Banquet recently.

Students receiving proficiency awards on the local level were: Ronna Woock, ag education, beef production and equine management; Brad Warmka, dairy production entrepreneurship and wildlife management; Danielle Warmka, Dustin Parrish and Travis Pluim, dairy production placement; Rachel Perry, food service; Cody Zimmerman, goat production; Travis Pluim, swine production entrepreneurship and Jennifer Posthuma, nursery operations.

State-qualifying career development teams were the ag mechanics team of Scott Schoenwetter, Dustin Parrish, Dan Hansen and Kurt Koneck; dairy team of Danielle Warmka, Brad Warmka, Jordan Wierenga and Chase Harmsen; and the milk quality team of Jennifer Posthuma, Dylan Siewert, Dan Harmsen and Bryce Buchda.

Receiving the state degree at the state FFA Convention next month will be Travis Pluim, Jennifer Posthuma, Dylan Siewert, Brad Warmka and Cody Zimmerman. Warmka was also selected as a Star Farmer of Wisconsin finalist and will interview at the state convention for the Star Farmer title. Aaron Frye will participate in the State FFA Chorus.

Those recognized in the Stars program were: Star Discovery Award, Dylon Pokorny; Star Greenhand, Abby Henken; Star Chapter Degree, Danielle Warmka; Star in Ag Business Brad Warmka; Star in Ag Placement, Travis Pluim.

Outstanding Youth Award winners were: Rachel Perry, Cody Zimmerman and Jennifer Posthuma. Receiving the Livestock Achievement Award was Brad Warmka. Travis Pluim earned the Bryant Pluim Memorial Award while Warmka earned the Gib Krohn Memorial Award.

Winning the Outstanding Service Award was Ballweg Implement of Waupun. Outstanding FFA Alumni members were Earl and Jane Figge, while Jason Zwiefel was awarded the Honorary FFA Degree. The Courtland Sperger Memorial Award was presented to Jody Henken.

Earning FFA Alumni Scholarships were: Jennifer Posthuma, Rachel Perry, Brad Warmka, Travis Pluim, Dylan Siewert and Cody Zimemrman. The FFA scholarship winners were Jennifer Posthuma and Rachel Perry.

MG meeting to feature orchids

JUNEAU - Judy Stevenson, an orchid grower from the Madison area, will share her knowledge while educating gardeners about how to prompt orchids to bloom at the May 23 meeting of the Dodge County Master Gardeners. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Dodge County Administration Building auditorium, 127 E. Oak St., Juneau. The program is free and open to the public.

Grant awarded to study weather impact on cattle

WASHINGTON - The Agriculture Department awarded $19.5 million to further research, education and Extension activities related to climate solutions in agriculture, specifically the effects of climate variability and change on dairy and beef cattle. The University of Wisconsin and partners received $9.9 million to study the environmental impacts on dairy production systems and create best management practices for producers on the farm. The remaining $9.6 million in funding was awarded to Oklahoma State University and partners, whose focus is to safeguard regional beef production while decreasing agriculture's environmental footprint.

State dairy herd count falls below 11,000

MADISON - For the first time in many generations, the total number of dairy farm operations in Wisconsin has fallen below the 11,000 mark. The state's agriculture department announced its latest dairy herd count numbers, which indicates there were 10,915 herds milking during the first week of May. That's a drop of about 600 herds since the same month a year ago.
