Our public schools are the pride of our communities. If our schools fail, our communities - and our businesses - suffer the consequences.
The Wisconsin Business Alliance, a new statewide nonprofit organization that works to improve Wisconsin's business climate while protecting our quality of life, opposes school privatization efforts and encourages legislators to support adequate funding of our public schools because:
1. We want to keep taxes down. Voucher schools drive property taxes up by forcing taxpayers to fund two educational systems. We can't afford to fund public education and support for-profit schools.
2. Our businesses rely on quality employees and thriving communities. That means educating as many young people as possible to the highest level possible.
3. The best evidence available says voucher schools do no better - and in some cases worse - than public schools. In Milwaukee, where vouchers have been in place for over 20 years, voucher schools have never out-performed public schools.
In light of these facts, we're asking our legislators to:
? Remove school privatization schemes from the budget.
? Increase public school districts' ability to raise and spend resources on children from $0 to $250 per student per year.
