Work continues this spring on the restoration on the Cat Island Chain in Green Bay.

Crews are rebuilding three barrier islands that were lost in the 1970s to waves and ice. Restoration of 4.3 miles of islands is expected to create about 270 acres of upland wildlife habitat to the south and west of the islands.

The project involves constructing stone dike from 4 feet to 8 feet high on lake bed and installing concrete culverts between islands, using dredged materials to build up the islands. Costs are being shared between entities including the federal government and Brown County. Michels Corp. of Brownsville is working on the federal portion of the project under an $8.8 million contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
