The Fond du Lac County UW-Extension recently hired Carmelo Dávila as the new Bilingual 4-H Youth Development Assistant. His role is to support the initiatives, efforts and aspirations of current 4-H members and their families. In addition, he contributes to the UW-Extension effort of educating residents who have been underserved.

"We at UW-Extension, our county officials, and 4-H leaders are making a concerted effort to support our youth and families in their quest to thrive," Dávila says. "I have been meeting with Latino high school students in Ripon, for example, about starting a 4-H group. Joining 4-H is a good way to develop a sense of belonging and commitment to a new home."

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, turned Wisconsinite, Dávila holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Archaeology from Michigan Technological University. He earned his B.A., with a concentration in European History, from the University of Puerto Rico. He worked with youth as a high school teacher in Puerto Rico and as an Upward Bound Resident Assistant for Finlandia University in Michigan. He also worked as outreach expert and cultural/educational event coordinator for the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. He has lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, as well as in Rhode Island and New York.

Dávila moved to Fond du Lac with his family last December. He is very happy to have moved to "a place with a strong sense of community, a place where family values provide much of the dynamism of the everyday life."
