Why are Richard and Betsy DeVos of Michigan contributing $337,330 to Walker's school voucher and charter school campaign? Why are millionaires and multimillionaires (from out-of-state and in-state) contributing $2.4 million to Walker's push for voucher and charter schools? And why are we residents of Wisconsin not up in arms about this latest attempt to minimize the public schools of Wisconsin, which have had an overwhelming record of excellence among all the states?
Our public schools are fully accredited and our teachers are college degree professionals, unlike the staff and so-called schools in the voucher and charter programs.
So why? Why the infusion of all this money? Is there money to be made from privatization of all schools, i.e., more taxpayer dollars, influence over subject matter by unqualified contributors.
The vast majority of Wisconsin's high school graduates are public high school graduates. And these are our teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers, plumbers, technicians and even politicians who have gone on to higher education.
To paraphrase William Shakespeare: There's something rotten in the state of Wisconsin and the odor would seem to be emanating from Walker's office and from the Republican state Legislature.
Transparency must prevail.
