Distraught Spencer man charged with 4th OWI in 5 years

A Spencer man is facing felony drunken-driving charges after he told police he drank heavily at a bar because he was distraught over his wife's affair and a relative's illness.

Robert C. Lane, 37, appeared in Marathon County Circuit Court on Monday on a charge of fourth-offense drunken driving within a five-year period. Judge Mike Moran ordered Lane held in the Marathon County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond. Assistant District Attorney Lesli Pluster told Moran that Lane told police he had "too many drinks" and refused to submit to a breath test when he was pulled over early Sunday morning.
