May 23, 1939 - $400,493 for county roads: President Roosevelt has approved a WPA grant of $400,493 to improve Brown County owned roads, it was announced when the county board of supervisors convened for the May session.

Word of the president's approval was received by telegram from United States Senator Alexander Wiley. Final approval, Wiley said, "depends on availability of funds and presence of certified relief labor."

Apparently some confusion existed in the minds of county officials in regard to the grant. Some, obviously having the "alphabet" twisted, at first believed it to be the PWA grant for which the board had applied last year.

Brown county already has voted a $350,000 bond issue for highway improvement, and final action on this project is slated for the present session of the supervisors. This project is to include repaving of S. Broadway in Green Bay and Fourth street in De Pere, along with 54 miles of blacktop on county trunks.
