Despite media reports, city workers are not rich

We are not all wealthy. Now that Press-Gazette Media has the public thinking all city employees are millionaires, I would like to tell the public some facts not being reported.

The blue collar city employees are not nearly as well off as the Press-Gazette obviously wants the public to think. We have no problem paying for our pension and insurance, but it goes much further than that. We've had a wage freeze for nearly three years. We no longer have any overtime; there is a hiring freeze; and now they can call us off vacation during inclement weather.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. After 2013, our contract is up. We have no bargaining rights any longer, so it might get much worse. All my friends and relatives in private jobs make more than many city employees so next time the Press-Gazette roasts us, think about this letter.
