Mayor breaks tie to deny vacation rentals in city

Council deadlocked Tuesday over the issue

The city of Sturgeon Bay once again turned down rental of private homes to tourists Tuesday after Mayor Thad Birmingham cast a tiebreaking vote to deny a homeowner's request.

Although the rest of Door County has allowed homes to be rented to tourists on a short-term basis, the city traditionally has nixed the idea. In Wisconsin these homes are licensed as tourist rooming houses. The city calls such a properties "lodging houses" and permits them only in the multiple-family residential and commercial zoning districts, according to Community Development Director Marty Olejniczak.
