Amy Gerarden lost everything Thursday when fire destroyed the 74-unit apartment complex where she lived.

The next day the mother-of-two expected help finding a new place to stay. Instead, she said representatives of Hillcrest Partnership, which owns Hilltop Place where the fire occurred, gave her a check for her security deposit and nine days of rent.

"We've been abandoned," Gerarden, one of 107 people displaced by the fire, said Friday in disbelief as she exited a special meeting held at Langlade Elementary School, which housed five people Thursday night who had no where to stay after the ...
