Wisconsin had the nation's third highest number of alcohol-related boating deaths in 2012, the same year that a bill to stiffen penalties on drunken boaters failed to make it out of committee.

Intoxicated boating killed eight people in the state last year, leaving the state behind only New York and Florida, U.S. Coast Guard figures show. Alcohol-related incidents killed more people in Wisconsin during that year than it did in Minnesota - known as the "land of 10,000 lakes" - and Michigan, which combined for four deaths.
