As we prepare to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, I'm insulted by the comments by Rae Ellen Smith (who objected to a part of a trail being named after someone, in this case a Marine who was killed in Iraq).
I have occasion to frequently visit the field of honor at Fort Howard Cemetery. My wife is buried in that section designed to honor veterans and their spouses. Her resting place is very close to that of Sgt. Ben Edinger. During these visits I honor Ben with a hand salute, and the words "thank you for your service."
I do this not because I have to, but rather because it's the right thing to do. As a Marine veteran myself, Ben is regarded as my brother. In my opinion, Ben, his family, and all who cared about him have made payment enough. On Memorial Day I will take the time to honor and respect those who deserve our recognition, I would hope Smith would do the same.
