Trudging through a marshy area of the school woods with a rake slung over his shoulder, Jaden Collien looks forward to the task ahead - clearing away brush to create a new walking trail.

"I knew working out here in the woods was going to be work, but I didn't expect us to be working on such big projects," Jaden said. "But I guess we're older and can handle it."

Jaden is among 112 students attending SAGES charter elementary school in Fox Lake. It is part of the Waupun Area School District and the state's first charter elementary school with a focus on an agriculture and environmental curriculum. The ...
