Facts on vouchers are being distorted
It is very hard to respectfully express my disappointment with the Fond du Lac School Board, along with Dr. Sebert and Earl Jewett for their misrepresentation of the facts regarding school choice vouchers.
While I deeply appreciate their hard work to provide a good public education, I have often wondered why they are so determined to distort the facts about vouchers. By leaving out critical facts they are leading the public to believe that property taxes will have to be raised to offer families (only those who are under three times the poverty level) the otherwise unaffordable option of a private education. In truth, private schools have saved taxpayers millions of dollars over the decades they have been providing quality education at no cost to the district.
The Board's op ed piece and recent advertisement (paid for by district dollars) suggest that voucher schools are substandard, with no accountability. By law, the choice schools require teachers to have degrees and teaching licenses, and require the same minimum hours/days of instruction that public schools do.
Those educated in the legal aspects of the school choice proposal know that it is not the State supporting the private or religious schools. In fact, the state would have no funds without we, the taxpayers, paying our due taxes. Even those who do send their children, at their own additional expense, are paying for the public schools. No one in the public schools would ever expect to pay for both, but they have no problem with the few in private schools paying for both. The dollars in the state funds are for the students and should rightfully follow the students to the schools of their parents' (taxpayers) choice.
