Captain John Houfek reflects on illustrious career

When John Houfek walked into his guidance counselor's office at North High School more than three decades ago to discuss his career goals, he didn't have a clue about what to do with his life.

"She asked, 'Have you considered the service academy?' I said 'no'," Houfek said. "So she gave me the books. I went home and looked at them that night and I said 'Ya. This is right for me.'"

Had she not made that suggestion Houfek admitted he may not have spent the last 30 years of his life as a Navy officer, much of it in the Navy SEALs. Captain Houfek, now 52, retired April 12. He said his Sheboygan upbringing ...
