Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media after practice on Tuesday. Here are some highlights:
♦ Energy has been great. This is the installation phase. Youíll have some mental errors but thereís successes. Identifying things you need to work on.
♦ Statistically we have not done very well in the error of creating fumbles. Sacks in the 50 and the fumbles not. 48 percent of fumbles caused are from sacks. We need to create more fumbles. That starts with the awareness footwork balance. Our defensive players are doing a good job of it. Itís something weíre working through.
♦ No, (defensive tackle) Johnny Jolly is not here. Iíll comment on Jolly and his situation when heís back part of the football team. Heís still going through the process. ... I think our society is built on second chances. I think how many times you look through the history of successful individuals, there are many times it wouldnít have happened had an individual not been given a second chance. Iím proud of Johnny Jolly but he still has a lot in front of him. ... Hope so. Trust me, when he walks in here, weíll talk about it.
♦ I felt the 2010 linebacker group was the deepest group Iíve ever been around. This group, I think definitely has a chance to champion that. You can never have enough good football players. Desmond (Bishop)ís situation is medical. Itís clearly a competitive group.
♦ Looks good. I really felt (linebacker Terrell) Manning came on at the end of last season. I felt he couldíve made an impact earlier if it wasnít for his injuries. Heís a good young player who weíre counting on to make an impact.
♦ We plan six months ahead (for the draft), so thatís not within the six months. Iím not really thinking about it.
♦ (Tight end) Andrew Quarless clearly the best shape heís been in since heís been a Green Bay Packer. Sometimes it takes a full year and a half to do that. He spent a lot of extra time here. Heís done an excellent job in strength and conditioning. Heís one guy that has shown ability to play on and off the line. Weíre challenging the other tight ends to do so.
♦ (Cornerback) Casey Hayward was outstanding as a rookie. You can just see how comfortable he is out there. Heís a natural football player. All these professional athletes have a high level and skill set. It comes very natural to him.
♦ I really don't evaluate as much as probably everybody else does. I'm looking for an ability to cross train and facilitate as many personnel groupings as you possibly can.
♦ Moving minicamp into OTAs. It's a couple different things that changed. Moved minicamp into third week product of what we've accomplishing the following week.
♦ You look at last year's class, how many plays they played. I'll be introduced to see how that matches up against the other classes. Those guys played a lot of football last year. We improved particularly when those guys are in there. I"m excited about (linebacker Nick) Perry and how he's come back. I say it every year, I think second year players is where you make the biggest improvement.
