Packers sign former walk-on Division II safety

May 28, 2013

It took more than four months, but the Green Bay Packers finally added another safety to their roster on Tuesday in Chowan (N.C.) University rookie David Fulton.

Standing 6-foot, 196 pounds, Fulton registered 39 tackles (29 solo), five tackles for a loss, a team-high four interceptions, nine passes deflected, a sack and a forced fumble as a senior in 2012 at the NCAA Division II school located in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Over his four-year career, Fulton played in 34 games with 101 tackles (66 solo), nine tackles for a loss, two sacks, six interceptions and 16 passes deflected.

This past season, he was part of the Hawks’ most successful D-II season in program history as Chowan went 6-4 and 5-2 in conference to finish runner-up in the CIAA Northern Division. Their most wins since transitioning to a four-year institution in 1992.

Fulton, 23, came to Chowan as a walk-on before finishing his senior season with four interceptions, which ranked second in the conference. He’s the 21st player from the program to get a chance to play football professionally.

Prior to the move, the Packers only had five safeties on the roster with all of them being holdovers from the previous season with second-year safety Sean Richardson still recovering from offseason neck surgery.

The Packers, who have one spot remaining on their 90-man roster, are committed to the trio of Morgan Burnett, Jerron McMillian and M.D. Jennings, but the addition of Fulton gives them an additional body to rotate in camp.

Interestingly enough, four of the six safeties on the roster came into the league as undrafted free agents.
