Merrill seeks to double hotel tax rate

City officials are working on a proposal to double Merrill's hotel-room tax rate to raise money for new signs and business-district beautification projects that could draw tourists to the city.

Merrill currently has a room tax rate of 4 percent, and city officials want to double that to the highest rate allowed by state statute. The city's Personnel and Finance Committee on Tuesday recommended increasing the rate; the City Council will take up the measure at its June 11 meeting.
