Kewaunee Chamber tops 100 members

The Kewaunee Chamber of Commerce has just completed a successful membership campaign with 103 members for 2013-14. Of that, 45 are first-time Chamber members.

The board selected Mary Anderson to champion the membership campaign. Anderson was able to give time to making personal contacts, calls and visits with businesses to discuss the direction of the chamber.

"The success of the membership drive shows the community is pulling together to confront the economic challenges facing us," Anderson said. "As the Chamber promotes business more, we all see a brighter economic future."

In 2013, the Chamber launched a marketing effort to showcase Kewaunee area businesses outside the area. Leveraging the most prominent tourist draw in Lake Michigan and river fishing, the board sent a team to the Milwaukee sports show in March to generate interest in Kewaunee as a sport fishing destination.

The Chamber provides the organizing force behind large community events. Summer Music in the Park, Trout Fest, Christkindlmarkt, and Cabin Fever Winter Festival are all coordinated by Kewaunee Chamber volunteers. The Chamber also manages the visitor information center and produces the visitor and business guide.

Board President Jessica Petersen said the chamber is looking to expand events in ways that allow for involvement and also promote business.

"We're not afraid to look at something from a difference perspective," she said. "We have a lot of momentum now and we're showing our members that the chamber is committed to doing things that matter for the community."

Music in the Park kicks off at 5:30 p.m. June 23 with Copper Box at the Harbor Park Gazebo.
