Our state's commitment to public education is rooted in Article X of the Wisconsin constitution, which calls for the creation of district schools to provide free and uniform instruction to all the state's children. The statewide voucher proposal, which was cooked up by voucher lobbyists and inserted into the state budget in the middle of the night without a full public hearing and debate, is a betrayal of this heritage and undermines our state's long standing commitment to a locally controlled and administered public education system.
