The Fond du Lac City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to allow BMX bikes inside the Adelaide Skate Park along North Hickory Street on a trial basis.
The park was constructed for skateboard use, but there has been strong support in recent months to allow BMX bikes inside, as well. A petition supporting the move was signed by about 500 people.
The trial begins today, although one Councilman said he is aware that bikes were being used in the park prior to the formal vote.
Tim Weddle, 810 S. Pioneer Parkway, was the only person who asked to speak. He said if a decision was made to open the park to bikes, his young son would be there Thursday morning.
Weddle said he understands that about a one-third of the cost to construct the park was raised by skateboard riders. He believes “another generation” of youth on different wheels are waiting to use the park.
The trial will run through Labor Day. Council requested a September update to assess the success or failure of the move.
